Aspiration Bank co-founder sentenced to 14 years for fraud

Aspiration Co-Founder Joseph Sanberg Sentenced to 14 Years in Federal Prison

In a recent development, Joseph Sanberg, the co-founder of Aspiration, a green banking fintech platform, was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison on charges of fraud. The now-defunct company has been under scrutiny for fraudulent activities, causing significant financial losses amounting to $248 million to numerous victims.

The Charges Against Sanberg

Sanberg was found guilty of two counts of wire fraud in October 2025, following a thorough investigation by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. The court discovered that Sanberg, along with a co-conspirator, Ibrahim AlHusseini, duped investors by illegitimately procuring $145 million in loans. They achieved this by pledging shares of Sanberg’s Aspiration stock as collateral.

Moreover, they falsified bank and brokerage statements and kept it under wraps that Sanberg was the source of some of the revenue recorded by the company. Sanberg was found to have personally solicited companies and individuals to enter into agreements with Aspiration, committing to pay large sums of money for tree-planting services. Unbeknownst to these parties, Sanberg was the source of these funds, and he managed to hide this fact, subsequently causing Aspiration’s financial statements to reflect falsely inflated revenues.

The Sentence and Its Impact

United States District Judge Stephen V. Wilson sentenced Sanberg to 168 months in federal prison and scheduled a restitution hearing for the victims. The underlying message of this sentencing is clear: those who abuse trust for personal gain and secure loans based on deceit and misrepresentation will be held accountable.

Sanberg’s sentencing is in line with other recent financial fraud cases. For instance, Charlie Javice was sentenced to seven years for her fraud in relation to JPMorganChase’s $175 million acquisition of her student-finance startup, Frank. Similarly, FTX co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried received a 25-year sentence after being found guilty of seven counts of fraud and conspiracy.

Aspiration’s Rise and Fall

Aspiration, co-founded by Sanberg and Andrei Cherny in 2013, was once a promising venture that attracted celebrity investors such as Robert Downey Jr., Orlando Bloom, and Leonardo DiCaprio. The digital banking fintech also established partnerships with major companies like Meta and Microsoft.

However, the company’s fraudulent activities led to its downfall. The fintech, which had gone public through a SPAC in 2021, shifted to selling carbon offsets before collapsing under a massive debt the following year. Subsequently, the successor firm, CTN Holdings, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in April 2025 following Sanberg’s arrest.

The Aftermath and Ongoing Investigations

Despite the downfall of Aspiration, the consumer fintech arm of the company managed to survive by spinning off in April 2024. The operation was later rebranded to GreenFi and was acquired by Coastal Financial Bank early this year.

However, Aspiration is still under the scanner with ongoing investigations. Notably, its $300 million endorsement deal with the NBA team LA Clippers and a $28 million deal with star player Kawhi Leonard have been scrutinized for potentially circumventing NBA salary cap rules.

With the sentencing of Sanberg, the story serves as a stark reminder of the potential hazards of financial fraud. It underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and the upholding of trust in the financial sector. For more details on the case, read the full story Here.
